HERITAGE BREED FARMERS

STUART FARM - Gerald, MO
Farmers: Fred & Serena Stuart
Heritage Breeds: American Milking Devon Cattle (Critically Endangered), Tamworth Hogs (Watch), Delaware Chickens (Watch), Hampshire Chickens (Watch)
Fred and Serena Stuart own a small family farm outside of Gerald, MO specializing in Freedom Ranger meat chicken and heritage breed layers, beef cattle, and hogs. They raise American Milking Devon cattle for beef, milk, and oxen, Tamworth hogs for pastured pork, and Delaware and New Hampshire hens for free range eggs.
The Stuarts have been very instrumental in my heritage breed photo project. Allowing me to visit their farm to photograph their cattle, hogs, and chickens have provided me with many wonderful images as well as a better understanding of these breeds and the importance they play in our future.
They offer pastured raised chicken, pork and beef raised the right way. You can catch them at the Wildwood, MO Farmers Market or to learn more about Stuart Farm, please visit...

WITNESS TREE FARM - Gerald, MO
Farmer: Gail Cross
Heritage Breeds: Randall Cattle (Critically Endangered), Arapawa Goats (Critical), Brabant Horses (Watch), Pilgrim Geese (Threatened), Cayuga Ducks (Watch)
Our goal is to share old wisdom and ways of living with the land just as our ancestors did. To that end, we strive to make better known the rare, heritage breeds of livestock, poultry, seeds, herbs, and produce, and the sometimes-forgotten methods of day-to-day living from simpler times.
Gail Cross is another farmer that I have had the pleasure to spend time with while working on my heritage breed photo project. She has 385 acres outside of Gerald, Missouri where she raises rare breeds of livestock and poultry, such as the Arapawa Goats, Randall Cattle, Brabant Horses, Pilgrim Geese, and more.
You can help support her efforts to keep genetically valuable breeds from disappearing. You can sponsor an animal for a year...you will receive a certificate showing the individual animal's photo, vital statistics, breed information, and a free pass to our October festival The Annual Mid-Missouri Horse, Mule, & Ox Farming & Historical Crafts Days which is held at her farm the first full weekend in October every year.
Learn more about the important work Gail is doing, sponsor a rare breed, or to learn more about her Heritage Days event in October, please visit....

NORTHERN PRAIRIE ALPACAS - Sullivan, MO
Farmer: Deb Wellinghoff
Farm Animal: Alpacas
Endangered Status: Safe
While the alpaca is not necessarily considered a heritage breed, they are however considered a farm animal and not an exotic. I have included Deb and her wonderful animals among my collection of farmers because the alpaca once faced extinction when the Spanish invaded the Andes Mountains. Due to disease and war almost 98% of the alpaca population was wiped out. Had the natives not fled high into the mountains, alpacas would be extinct. Due to an ever growing popularity the alpaca's numbers have recovered well enough that they are no longer in danger. I look at the alpaca as my Bald Eagle of the farm animal community....once facing extinction to only be thriving due to conservation efforts.
Deb has a farm store where she offers workshops, fleece, yarn, handwoven rugs and other alpaca fiber items. She also offers animals for sale and farm tours. You can follow her on Instagram or Facebook as Northern Prairie Alpacas.

Sunflower Savannah - Beaufort, MO
Farmer: Sam Wiseman Heritage Breeds: St. Croix Sheep and Cayuga Ducks Endangered Status: Both the St. Croix and the Cayuga's are on the Watch list. Sam Wiseman surely demonstrates the circle of life in this statement from her website.... Here at Sunflower Savannah, we believe in the continuity of life. Everything serves a purpose and contributes to the wellbeing of the farm. The sheep eat the grass that choke our fields. Without this, fuel would be burned in our tractor to cut the grass. In return they provide compost to grow our gardens. The garden provides plant life to support the Market, the animals and ourselves. Our dogs guard the animals or the house and while the cats bring us comfort, they are also the destroyers of vermin that ruin the grain and seeds for the garden. The chickens, ducks, and geese eat the insects that eat the plants that feed them and ourselves. In turn they provide eggs to eat and compost to feed the garden...and this is the House that Sam and Bill have built.. Visit her website to learn more at www.sunflowersavannah.com |

CONSERVATION GALLERY
at the Hofgarten
As of March 2023 I am pairing up with local botanical artist Theresa Long. We will be exhibiting and selling our work at the new Conservation Gallery located in the Black Shire Distillery at the Hofgarten in Hermann, Missouri.
It is an excellent partnership as I photograph endangered breeds of livestock and poultry, and Theresa paints native Missouri botanicals. A portion of our sales through the gallery will be donated to organizations that aide in the conservation of rare breeds of farm animals to prevent extinction and native species of plants, to work on restoring and establishing natural areas reminiscent of early settlement prairies, savannas and wetlands. Theresa Long Art Theresa Long shares a passion for the natural world through her paintings, gardens and conservation efforts at her family farm. Tending and reconstructing Prairie, Stream, Glade and Wetland habitats provides endless inspiration and dedication to her work of Painting for Conservation. www.theresalongart.com |
NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
LIVESTOCK CONSERVANCY
I donate a portion of my sales from my Heritage Breed Photo Series to the Livestock Conservancy so they can continue the extremely important work that they are doing to ensure a better world for us all. Mission "To protect endangered livestock and poultry breeds from extinction” Why save them? Many of America’s once-common farm animals face extinction if we do not take action now. Rare farm animals represent an irreplaceable piece of earth’s biodiversity and offer incredible variety that may be needed for future farms - robust health, mothering instincts, foraging, and the ability to thrive in a changing climate. These farm animals are a vital part of ensuring food security for our planet – now and for the future Learn more here... www.livestockconservancy.com |

CANHAM FARM HORSE RESCUE
After visiting with friends in Scotts Valley, California I fell in love with the horses of Canham. My friends volunteer at the horse rescue and allowed me plenty of time to bond with these amazing creatures and to learn the ins and outs of the farm. I've seen the good that they are doing and how dedicated my friends, the owner, and other volunteers are, as they are advocates for horses in need.
After my visit I designed a series of note cards to help raise funds for these beautiful horses, each with their own unique personality and a new lease on life. Visit my online shop or one of my art shows to get your set of note cards. I have three sets with twelve cards each and six different designs per set.
Canham Farm Horse Rescue is not your typical Horse Rescue or Horse Rehabilitation Facility. We rescue and help end the suffering of abused, neglected, unwanted horse, and rescue and advocate for our nation’s wild horses.
We are committed to reducing the greatest amount of suffering for the largest number of horses through advocacy, education and, when possible, exposing cruelty and prosecuting abusers.

CULTURAL FESTIVALS - ST. LOUIS ART FAIR
Volunteering since 2016
Cultural Festivals was founded in 1994 by a group of passionate art enthusiasts who wanted to breathe life into the cultural landscape of St. Louis. The organization began under the official name "The Saint Louis Art Fair" and aimed to showcase high-end visual art and stimulating live performances.
The Art Fair Sourcebook has ranked the Saint Louis Art Fair in the top ten art fairs and festivals to visit. If I'm not in the show, I gladly volunteer to do whatever jobs are available. I also enjoy helping during the Mock Jury and Preview Nights.
